Doctor Who: Recap of S7:Ep.5 – The Angels Take Manhattan a.k.a. It’s Called Marriage

Saturday, September 29th, 2012

This is the story of Amelia Pond, a girl that fell for a “Raggedy Man” that came from the sky in a Blue Box and promised to take her on adventures through space and time…

And what an adventure it was.

In tonight’s episode, we said goodbye to one of  of our favorite companions and our favorite companion’s spouse, Amy Pond and Rory Williams a.k.a. The Ponds.

I think in hindsight, we all felt that the Ponds would always be around and even knowing that this would be the end of the Ponds chapter in the Doctor Who story, all of us were not prepared to see them go.

So, we sat with our fish-fingers and custard and box of Kleenex and watched as the our favorite trio popped up in Central Park in NYC.

Everything seems to go swimmingly well as Amy and the Doctor talk about reading books aloud and not wanting to know the end of a story and Rory goes off to get some java. That’s when things go awry. Rory is picked as a target by the weeping Angels and is transported to an alternate universe that was created by the angels to entrap victims to become a food source (via their energy) for the angels.

Rory comes across River Song in this alternate universe, but not even the Doctor or his wife can stop the inevitable from happening. Rory has been marked and there is nothing anyone can do. This leaves Amy to make a decision and in the end love wins.

Did they die, yes. At first, Amy and Rory find a loophole (via a paradox) that allows them to negate the existence of the angels and transports them to our time as if nothing happened. But, that was too easy. Just when we thought they were going to get a chance to go back to London and live their happy little lives and continue to be a part of the Doctor’s life, the one weeping Angel survivor find them and once again marks Rory.

This time, Amy has to make a decision that shows why this show is so brilliant.

Amy picks Rory, even if it means that they she no longer sees her daughter or her Raggedy Man and that is when she allows the Weeping Angel to transport her to her Rory.

Hope is not all lost for Amy and Rory…

In an afterward in a book (because in this alternate universe Amy is a book publisher) Amy informs the Doctor that she and Rory live well and were happy and okay and that he has to tell the little girl waiting for him in the garden to have hope and be patient because her life will be filled with adventure…

Now, after drinking a few shots of tequila and having used all the Kleenex and paper towel in the house to dab away my tears, I know that this was possibly the best ending for Amy and her love.

But, now we have to deal with a Doctor who is at a loss and we’ve never really had to deal with that, have we?

So, we will see the first glimpse of the next chapter in the Doctor’s tale during the Christmas episode, here’s a teaser:

Off to cry again…
