I spent the better part of my day in a texting war with my brother (a Trekkie) over the announcement of J.J. Abrams being tapped as the director for Star Wars VII. He feels like the Star Trek frachise will now fall apart without Abrams at the helm. My response was, are they going to release Star Wars VII and Star Trek 3 on the same date? If I was a studio honcho, I would advise not to do such a foolish thing.
But, there is no talking to Ramon.
So, I am happy to say that Paramount Pictures vice chairman Rob Moore stated the following regarding Abrams future cinematic endeavors:
“J.J. will continue to develop projects for us including a new Mission: Impossible, and he is committed to produce another Star Trek.”
Movieweb surmised that, “It remains possible that J.J. Abrams will be back to direct Star Trek 3. Since there is a four-year gap between 2009′s Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, opening on May 17, it may be possible for J.J. Abrams to return and direct Star Trek 3 for a 2017 release. However, if Star Trek Into Darkness is an even bigger hit than Star Trek, Paramount may not want to wait that long.”
Between Star Wars, Star Trek, Mission Impossible and his two new tv pilots, I’m sure a lesser man would allow something to give, but this is J.J. Abrams of course.
