NYCC 2012: Lost Girl and Teen Wolf Panels

Monday, October 15th, 2012

By: John a.k.a. Maria’s Husband

Not many men would abide by their wife’s request to cover shows that they have never watched, but I did and I deserve a medal for it.

These are my notes for the Teen Wolf and Lost Girl panels:

Apparently, a very popular actor named Colton Hayes has decided to end his run on Teen Wolf. This was confirmed by executive producer Jeff Davis. He also stated that the door will always be open to him. About how the new season will progress without this actor, Jeff Davis stated,”We have a plan, but it’s not going to be easy. He’s got tough shoes to fill. We’re going to have to concentrate on making this a great season, hopefully, without him.”

I’m sure many ladies out there are devastated.

They also started to talk about the “bromancing” and i was surprised at how much the ladies wanted the men of the show to hook-up. Is that a thing? Scott and Stiles will move on from the ladies and they are juniors now and Stiles will be going on his story arc starting episode 3. Scott will be more of a leader in the upcoming extended season. Scott has greatness thrust upon him and will have to accepted his destiny.

I have to admit that the give and take between the fans and Tyler Posey was so alien to me because I cover video games. He would make a face or say something and the ladies went Awwwww…

On to a show that I have seen, Lost Girl. Ksenia Solo, Rick Howland, and Zoie Palmer were in attendance, but Kris Holden-Reid and Anna Silk made appearances via video and unfortunately, the cast could say nothing about the upcoming season.

What was discussed…

What was a geeky thing about them since they were at Comic-Con?

Ksenia loves gadgets.

Rick loves classic comics, old school tv and spider-man.

Zoie loves Wonder Woman, when she was 6 years old she swore that she could fight crime and as soon as she awoke in the morning she would don her tiara and cuffs.

What is their thing?

Ksenia loves New York City and is involved in anti-bullying campaign.

Rick is a musician and plays guitar as well as sings.

Zoie does not like cruelty towards animals.

Lost Girl Wardrobe:

Ksenia collaborates on the wardrobe that she wears and if she does not like it, they change it. She also mentioned that she hates heels and corsets.

Wikipedia is a tool to be valued:

Rick mentioned that he used Wikipedia to research fantasy role.

Issues with medical terminology:

Zoie mentioned that attempting to say the medical terminology on the show used to terrify her, but then she realized

From Ballet to Acting:

Ksenia mentioned that she started as a ballet dancer, but to be a dancer you need to constantly train and at best you have a 20 year career. She went on to say that acting is a career that will allow her to work beyond the 20 year mark.

How to get into the industry:

Rick gave advice to a small person about getting into the industry and he stated that if you really want to be in the industry to just do whatever you have to do to get into it. If you are not 100% than find something else.

Stunts:

Ksenia wants more sword play and Anna loves to do her own stunts.

Trick and Bo:

Rick stated that his character is very protective of Bo and it is because she is her grandfather.

All I have to say about the panel actually is that I now have a crush on Miss Solo, please don’t tell Maria.

Also, if I do this again (please pray that I do not) I will take video.

NYCC 2012: Haven Panel

Monday, October 15th, 2012

Saturday is a big day at New York Comic-Con’s IGN Theater. This is the day where all the major media events occur. On top for tv was Haven and the Walking Dead, a comic book movie event for The Dark Knight Rises, movie sneak peeks for The Conjuring, The Bay, Beautiful Creatures, Evil Dead and an anniversary event for Firefly.

Basically, this is a day to sit on your keester for nine hours. That’s right, nine hours. That is only because if you get a seat in the a.m. than you have a good shot at seeing the main events. It can be an exhausting process if the events prior to the main events are a bit off, but the day was kicked off perfectly with a fun panel from Syfy’s Haven.

In attendance: Emily Rose, Lucas Bryan, Eric Balfour, Adam Copeland and Executive Producers Sam Ernst and Jim Dunn.

In all honesty, I have not watched Haven at all, it is not a show that people had requested that I or Kelly should watch. So, I was not really expecting much from the panel.

So, I learned we were four episodes into the third season (yes, bad Maria) and that this season is considered a new slate in the show’s history. Prior to this season, the show was similar to Law and Order, where each episode centered on a specific case, but now the show is serialized and focusing more on Stephen King’s Colorado Kid plot. If you are wondering if Stephen King will show up on the show, don’t bother.

For those of you who do not follow the show, in the premiere we were introduced to a mysterious stranger who apparently knew the Colorado Kid 27 years ago and blames Audrey for his disappearance and death. This is a clear indication that every storyline this season will be centered around the Colorado Kid plot.

In the second episode, we learned that Audrey will vanish in 47 days after a meteor shower that falls under the Hunter astrological sign and  Executive Producers Sam Ernst and Jim Dunn teased that there will be a “massive cliffhanger”, one that will be very emotional.  When a fan asked whether Audrey will disappear “right before our eyes”, Dunn said “yes” but not literally.

There were three cool moments of the panel:

  • *The camaraderie of the cast, especially between Eric Balfour, Adam Copeland and Lucas Bryan. It reminded me of the cast of Supernatural. They are a boisterous and hilarious group and if there is a shipdom that involves them it will be a naughty one for sure.
  • * The documentary video focused on the production of the Halloween episode which which was directed by Jason Priestly. The house, which was used in the episode, was haunted and at first everyone scoffs at the idea of haunted house, but as the filming progresses everyone just wants the filming to end. The episode will air October 26th.

So, after this panel, I decided to give this show a shot and I have to admit that I like it and will continue to watch. You should give this show a chance.

NYCC 2012: Arrow Panel

Monday, October 15th, 2012

So, over the weekend I attended the New York City Comic-Con and it is clear that it has evolved in leaps and bounds over the year and it is evident that it is a serious contender to becoming the East Coast’s major entertainment convention.

Over the last three years, the entertainers that attend the events and the events themselves have improved exponentially. Do you remember when Lou Ferrigno and Peter Mayhew were the biggest draw and the only reason you went was to see your favorite author? Well, now we see the likes of Julianne Moore (Carrie remake), Chloë Grace Moretz (Carrie remake), Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring), Lily Taylor (The Conjuring), Barry Levinson (The Bay) and notable tv panels for shows such as The Walking Dead, Lost Girl, Haven, Arrow and also high-profile authors such as Anne Rice in attendance.

I’ll try to recap everything, but I want to state that one of the most fun panels of the weekend was for the CW’s newest show, Arrow.

In attendance: Stephen Amell, Willa Holland, Katie Cassidy, Marc Guggenheim and the Geoff Johns was the moderator.

One of the funny moments during the panel was a fan question the revolved around Queen’s time on the island. The fan asked if the island in Arrow was like the island in Lost and even though Stephen Amell wished it was, it was not. But, the show does use one of Lost’s favorite tools to give fans an idea on the back story of the characters and that is flashbacks. Unfortunatelt for Amell, the island bits force him to be in make-up for 90 minutes, but the change in look and clothing allows him to transform into that character (he mentioned the playing Oliver Queen was actually playing four distinct characters).

“When [‘Arrow’] went to series, I was hoping that Oliver — when he got to the island — would be really beaten down to nothing before he rises back up again,” said Amell. “As Oliver Queen in the present day, he’s unflinching. And he does some things that are pretty difficult to wrap your head around. The island helps explain why he does it, why he has to do it. And it helps you relate to the character more.”

One of the consistent topics in the discussion revolved around the character named Speedy. Speedy is the name of Green Arrow’s sidekick, Roy Harper. Yet, Willa Holland wants her character to be Speedy and when asked about it she replied “because I am ready to kick some butt! I am ready to pick up a bow and arrow whenever you guys are ready to write it in for me.”  Guggenheim mentioned that there is a scene, that may pop-up in the DVD, which was cut that show’s Oliver’s sister pick up an archery award to smash some pills.

There were four characters mentioned that perked everyone’s ears up:

  1. 1. John Barrowman’s Well Dressed Man – the character will make his debut in the fifth episode titled “Damaged,” He’s described as being as mysterious as he is wealthy and recur as an acquaintance of the Queen family and prominent figure in Starling City.
  2. 2. Collin Donnell’s Tommy Merlyn: In the comic book’s, Oliver Queen was inspired to take up archery by the amazing archer, “Merlyn the Magician”. Once Green Arrow began to become famous, the two met again, as Merlyn challenged the hero to a public archery contest and defeated him. With that victory under his belt, Merlyn vanished for years, only to resurface as a member of the League of Assassins. Look to episode 7 to see Tommy make a shift in it’s character development, but before we see Tommy turn to the dark side, Arrow will face a long list of bad guys.
  3. 3. Jessica DeGouw’s Helena Bertinelli aka The Huntress will appear in the the seventh episode of the season. In Arrow Bertinelli will be kept close to Oliver Queen’s, when he needs her the most.
  4. 4. Katie Cassidy’s Black Canary was not really discussed but, Mark Guggenheim mentioned that we will see what Laurel is capable of in the third episode.

Towards the end of the panel Geoff Johns mentioned that the digital comic book that premiered at San Diego Comic-Con which will mirror the show but also gives us some insight to the story and the characters that cannot be expressed during the season.

Overall, it was a great panel. I mean I learned about trapping, the salmon ladder and legolasing.Yea, you just had to be there to appreciate how much fun the panel was.

SDCC 2012: Interviews with Beauty and the Beast’s Kristin Kreuk and Jay Ryan + Panel Deets

Thursday, July 12th, 2012

CB – 3:31 p.m. – Moderator Dalton Ross takes the stage to make a few comments before the screening. No singing candlesticks in this version of Beauty and the Beast and no Ron Perlman in lion make-up. Bummer.

Some quick comments on the pilot. The episode sets up the origin story of Vincent (a.k.a. The Beast) and his first encounter with Kreuk’s character Catherine, when he saved her life after her mother was murdered. The pilot moves between an investigation Catherine is working on (she’s a cop) and her re-introduction to Vincent. The dialogue is a little bit stiff sometimes, and there are a few moments that border on cheesy but there’s definite potential for the show to go places, if it has some time to settle in. In the meantime, Kreuk pulls off some solid action scenes, though I would have liked to see a bit more of VIncent in action. The biggest moments with him in beast-mode are from Catherine’s perspective and in both cases, she wasn’t in the right state of mind to see things clearly, so we get shadows and blurry looking attacks. Hopefully that won’t always be the case.

4:17 p.m. The Q&A portion of the panel has started. The cast are on stage. Moderator Dalton Ross acknowledges how lucky Kristin Kreuk is (first getting Superman, now this handsome beast). He then acknowledges how attractive the beast is. Seems like most of his beastliness is internal (adrenaline-induced rage and that sort of thing), but he does get a sort of veiny thing in his face. The writers woo’ed Kristin with cupcakes to get her do the part.

4:20 p.m. – Writers talking about how this series is a procedural and a love-story. The spirit of the orignal series is still in there. Mentions of the original story, and the idea that there are beauties and beasts in all of us. As for the serialized element, which includes Vincent’s backstory (a military experiment gone wrong turned him into a beast) and Catherine’s mother’s death, they’re still working on how that will fit into the series going forward.

4:23 p.m. – Dalton brings up how physical Vince will be going forward. He mentions the blurry factor. It sounds like we’ll see more physical stuff in the series in the future. Writers talking about finding a balance between the procedural element (investigations), the romance between Catherine and Vincent, and the mythology. It will depend on what the focus of the episode will be. There are darker things coming and also maybe some funny moments. Someone (Jay Ryan, I think) suggested the idea of there being a female beast at one point (one of the other soldiers in the flashback showing the military experiment was apparently female so there may be a possibility of that).

4:27 p.m. – Fan questions! Someone asks if there will be any Smallville guest stars on the show. Kristin says that’d be great. (Doesn’t sound like anything’s planned right now). Kristin says she’s soon a little bit of the original series but isn’t basing her character on Linda Hamilton’s performance. Jay Ryan talking about working out with every muscle in his body, then corrects himself and says, “Not every muscle.” He gets laughs for that. A little girl asks Kristin how old she was when she started acting. Kristin said she was seventeen when she started “working for money.” She clarified “acting.”

4:31 p.m. – Someone asks about comparisons between Lana and Catherine. Lana is more expressive and emotionally vulnerable than Catherine. Last question is when the show starts. October 11. And that’s it! Quick panel because most of the time was spent showing us the pilot. I expect Elementary‘s panel will be the same. That’s up next and then Dexter after that!
