Recap of Arrow’s S3: Ep. 10 – Burned + Promo for Trust But Verify

Wednesday, January 16th, 2013

Network Blurb: Oliver, his confidence undermined by his defeat at the hands of the Dark Archer, goes up against a psychologically traumatized firefighter. The man has started committing acts of arson while calling himself Firefly. Meanwhile, Thea tries to cheer her mother up and Tommy throws a benefit for the firefighters.

My Review: In what can be called a stellar season for a freshman show on the 5th network, the winter premiere for the second half of Arrow which was titled “Burned,” was to say the least… a bit lackluster. Yes, it has been a month since we saw our new green hooded TV hero, but you would think they would have a much punchier episode than what was aired.

This is not to say that we did not like seeing Ollie ab curls on the salmon ladder or see him finally get over himself and what transpired in the last episode. But watching him get to that point took a bit longer than expected.

What was interesting was how the city slowly sees the green hooded vigilante as what he truly is, it’s guardian angel. How did this city come to see this? Well, a once thought of deceased firefighter comes back from the grave to exact his revenge on his old team. When Ollie tries to help the firebug, after he save the chief, the city sees what he truly is.

Other than that, the ladies took center stage in this episode:
Laurel’s co-worker loses her brother, Danny, due to this firebug and asks for help in finding out what truly happened to her brother. This spurs Laurel to steal an iPhone that her father has as evidence. This phone allows her to connect with the green-hooded vigilante. She goes to him for assistance, but he is hesitant. Yet, with the help of Digg, he finds out the truth and tries to help the assailant.

Thea also stepped up to the plate and confronted her grief-stricken mother and made Moira see how she has lacked in the parental department and that she was not the only one that has suffered. This forced Moira to take on Walter’s position in order to keep the company afloat. What this means for Moira, her kids and Walter (who wa kidnapped)… only time will tell.

My issue with the show right now is that it is slowly getting rid of any main characters of color. Of course, we still have Digg, but we would like to see a bit more variety in the color spectrum in Starling City.

Overall, I would not put this episode in the top 10 (and this was the 10th episode), but I am looking forward to seeing what is next for Ollie. Especially now that Laurel’s father is tracking her conversations with Arrow. You just gotta love the parental figures in this show. No wonder everyone is a bit screwed up.

Next up, S3: Ep.11, Trust But Verify
