NYCC 2012: Firefly 10th Anniversary Panel

Monday, October 15th, 2012

In attendance: Sean Maher, Jewel Staite and as a surprise to fans… Nathan Fillion.

As you may or may not know. the Science channel will air a 10th anniversary Firefly special and they showed an exclusive clip at the panel. You see the cast sitting around an oblong table discussing the show’s longevity. “We’re not getting cancelled, we’re making a great show,” he recalls saying. “I’m going ‘Buddy, bank on it!’ and slams his hand down.

The cancellation was the main point of discussion at the panel, at times joked about and at times expressed with thoughts of what occurred that final week. One of the most interesting moments involved Jewel’s memory of how Joss was vibrating with anger as he told her of the cancellation.

Fans asked if the seasons continued and they were given a chance to write a plot for their characters what would it be and Nathan Fillion stated that his character would go into a coma to lessen the workload. Jewel Staite stated that she wanted an episode where Kaylee would get to kick ass and that at the end of it Simon would be there to meet her naked and oiled.  Nathan made up his own Kaylee storyline and it was where she would be separated from the main group and she would have to save another person by kicking ass, but she would never tell her main group about that event. Maher said he wanted his character to eventually become an abusive drunk.

When asked about having the franchise live on Nathan added that maybe they could make Firefly: The Animate Series. Science Channel and Joss Whedon make this happen!

Here is some video I took from the event and it goes over how they got involved with the show:

There was one cute moment which involved a little girl who went up to the mic and informed the panelists that she was dressed as Kaylee and then she started to weep. Nathan and Jewel got her up on the stage and hugged her which made her night. This was just one of the many moments that showed how much fans have come to adore the characters, the show itself and how the show had changed their lives for the better.

So, if you are a Browncoat, tweet #FireflyNov11 and the the Science Channel will unlock exclusive footage from the Firefly: 10th Anniversary: Browncoats Unite documentary. Go! Do it now!
