Being Human: US

As you know, Sam Witwer was to play the character of Mitchell in Syfy’s adapted version of the popular British show. Well, the character has been renamed Aidan. Possibly, in homage to the actor that originated the character in the UK version, Aidan Turner.

Along for the ride are Meaghan Rath as “Molly” (Annie in the UK version) and Sam Huntington as “Josh” (George).

I was actually cringing as I typed most of that.

I forgot, Mark Pellegrino will play Vampire Aidan’s-Sam Witwer’s charismatic menacing mentor Bishop.

Syfy stated that there would be more announcements at Comic-Con.

06.05.10 – A few changes to the U.S. version of Being Human

Not only will the show(which will air it’s first season which will consist of 12 episodes in early 2011) take place in Boston, but the character that is fashion after George will not be named Josh. Also, Mitchell will be Jewish.

As the Executive Producer Rob Pursey stated the the US version will reveal more about the main characters’ family relationships. While it will keep the “chemistry” of the original, and start with the same premise of a vampire and werewolf moving into the ghost’s flat because it’s going cheap, it will take a different course from there.

Regarding the original version of Being Human, it will air its third season in 2011.

05.09.10 – Aidan Turner Speaks of the Third Season of Being Human:

Do you watch shows that are similar to Being Human, like True Blood?
“No, I don’t. It’s no reason really, I don’t know why! It’s not really my thing. I mean, not that I don’t enjoy the genre, the supernatural genre or maybe even sci-fi, but maybe you just get enough of it when you’re doing your own show and you’re completely surrounded by it. And by proxy anyway you happen to run into a lot of these [shows]. You’ll read a lot of articles about stuff, you’ll read the Twilight books because someone has thrown them at you while you’re hanging around set, or somebody is watching it on set, and you just dip and out. But I’m not an ardent viewer of any particular show at all, really.”

What do you make of the show’s success in America?
“That’s been really cool. It really took us by surprise. We went over to do a lot of press for it last August – we did Comic-Con and we did TCAs and all these big press events – and that’s when it really kind of hit home. We walked in to do a press conference at Comic-Con and there was 6,000 plus people. Granted, Doctor Who were on after us and they were all there for Doctor Who but they kind of knew who we were! So yeah, it’s been a big hit over there and I signed with an agent, and all the producers I’ve met recently are all very aware of the show.”

And they’re making a local US version…
“Yeah, I think the Sci-Fi channel have brought the structure or the premise of the show from Toby Whithouse, the creator. I don’t know really much about that, I don’t know when they’re going to start shooting it or whether they have. I heard a rumour that Mitchell might be a girl! I don’t know. I wish them all the best, it’s a cool little idea and it’s not surprising that somebody has picked it up, but we don’t know anything about it really. I kind of do hope it’s different though, I hope it’s not so like our show.”

How do you think Mitchell has developed in the last two series?
“There were huge arcs in both series for Mitchell. At the beginning he’s more sort of aware of where he wants to be and like any person recovering from any addiction, the beginning can be a lot easier sometimes because it’s new and it’s different and he has new friends and he’s living in a new house and he’s in a new area. But then as he stays there and he builds up relationships, and Herrick comes back in with all these other vampires, it gets a lot more difficult again. It’s hard to hold down his beliefs and what he wants to do. And I don’t know if he’s left now in a place where it’s all messed up and he’s kind of all over the place. It’s kind of touch and go for him, it could kind of go either way now. He could be a good guy next year, he could be back to old Mitchell trying to keep everything together, he could go completely off the rails!”

Do you have any ideas with what could happen now Annie’s been dragged through death’s door?
“I have no idea what could happen. That’s why I’m not a writer! Toby’s imagination is off the wall, so it could go anywhere. We could go in after her, we could leave her, although I would like to think that the boys would find a way to get her back.”

And what do you think will happen with Herrick being resurrected? Do you think he’ll be out for revenge?
“It’s great to have Jason [Watkins] back, because he’s a good mate of mine, but I have no idea what he could do. Is he going to follow us or is he going to keep the fold in Bristol and that? I don’t know. I’d imagine he’s not going to come back as a good guy. He’s probably going to be looking for our blood. He’ll certainly be looking for George, who ripped him apart and messed his head up a little bit.”

And you’re shooting the third series in Cardiff instead of Bristol. Do you think that will change anything?
“Well, I’ve never been to Cardiff so in that sense it’ll have a small effect on me in that everything’s kind of new! I think the reason for moving to Cardiff wasn’t necessarily a choice in regards to the story or the plot or anything. It’s just a BBC thing where they want to move a lot of drama out of Bristol for reasons only they know about.”

Finally, what do you think the prospects are for a fourth series?
“It would be a good thing! I guess we’ve got to see what happens – we haven’t even shot the third one yet so who knows what’s going to happen with the fourth. Again that’s completely out of our hands. It’s down to ratings and money and BBC and all that crappy boring stuff that I never want to think about. So I’ll just wait for the phone call after season three goes out on the air and see how people have taken it and assess the situation then.

Series Two will premiere on BBC America on July 24, 2010.

Series 1:

Ep. 1 – Three twenty-something housemates who are united in trying to live normal lives despite struggling with unusual afflictions: one’s a werewolf, one’s a vampire, and one’s a ghost. On first appearances things seem to be positive and ‘normal’ for the three friends. Ghost Annie is buoyed by the fact she is finally starting to be seen by ordinary people, rather than just by her housemates. In an attempt to escape the guilt and self-loathing for his previous killings, vampire Mitchell has sworn off blood, determined to kick the habit. Even the neurotic and anxious George is in relatively good spirits, putting his monthly transformation into a rampaging werewolf to the back of his mind to focus on life in the new house-share. But it’s not long before their supernatural conditions catch up with them…

Ep. 2 – George is shocked when he meets another werewolf, Tully (Dean Lennox Kelly, Shameless). Tully is the opposite of George – he’s perfectly content being a werewolf. He wants to teach George how to enjoy himself, but George just can’t accept what he’s become and is disgusted by Tully’s attitude. Unfortunately, Tully’s invited to stay at the house by Mitchell – a failed attempt on his part to embrace the world and be more human. Of course, he soon becomes the housemate from hell.

Ep. 3 – Annie meets another ghost, Gilbert (Alex Price), who died in the mid-1980s. He lets Annie know she’s stuck in limbo because there is something unresolved about her death. Meanwhile, a nurse George works with is clearly interested in being more than friends, but he does not think, considering his situation, that he should be in a relationship. But as the full moon gets closer, and George’s animalistic tendencies take hold, he becomes more impulsive – and lusty.

Ep. 4 – Mitchell’s attempts to embrace humanity become even more intense when he befriends a 12-year-old boy, Bernie (Mykola Allen), and his divorced mom, Fleur (Julia Ford), who live on the same street. But things turn sour when Bernie is shocked to see a glimpse of Mitchell’s vampire existence. Meanwhile, Annie is traumatized by a shocking revelation about Owen. Through her rage she discovers some powerful and uncontrollable skills.

Ep. 5 – Mitchell is traumatized by the way his friendship with Bernie ended, which has pushed him back towards the vampire fold. Annie decides that she must avenge Owen and enlists George’s help, but her self-confidence is at an all time low, and Owen still has a firm hold on her emotions even in death. Meanwhile Nina is becoming ever more suspicious of George’s behavior. George knows that if this relationship is to work then he cannot hide his true nature forever…

Ep. 6. – Mitchell is in the hospital following an almost-fatal attack on his doorstep. Mitchell does not want his friends involved in the inevitable showdown with his lethal attackers, but Annie bravely decides that she cannot just stand by without doing anything. But George is faced with a huge dilemma. Should he try to help Mitchell, or should he flee and try to start a normal life with his girlfriend? This is the season finale.
