Ian Somerhalder Q & A

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

TV Fanatic recently spoke with Ian Somerhalder about his chance of being nominated for an Emmy, the huge Delena following, a little about efforts to clean up the oil spill in his native Louisiana, and much, much more.

Here’s a peek into the interview …

There are petitions online that want you to be nominated for an Emmy.
Yeah, that’s not gonna happen. Damon being [Entertainment Weekly's] Sexiest Beast and me being nominated for an Emmy are two very different things. If I had that mind compulsion thing that Damon had I could probably go to the Academy and just brainwash them all.

If Stefan and Elena’s relationship is so great, why do you think there are so many Delena fans out there?
I don’t know. I think the only difference is, Stefan’s a much more sound individual. I just think the only reason is, Stefan’s got so much to deal with… with his brother, protecting his girlfriend, all of this shit, that Damon just has a lot more fun, and I think Stefan is just so concerned with protecting or making everything right, that Elena ends up having more fun with Damon.

Where are things standing with Gulf oil spill, and how things are moving along with your efforts?
It’s coming. It’s a disaster, and everyone’s been so helpful. I think BP’s going to make it right. I know that the nurseries that we thought had been destroyed haven’t been destroyed, the marshes weren’t destroyed, which is great. I think overall, with a lot of help from man, I think Mother Nature is going to bounce back. There’s a lot of oil that we don’t know where it is and there’s going to be a lot of side effects. It’s too early to know. What we’re seeing right now, we have no idea what’s lurking under the surface or what’s going to happen next year.

How can fans get involved?
I am putting together a foundation that’s going to work in conjunction with a bunch of other foundations that will be very, very focused on going into that region, and helping. A great deal. The National Wildlife Federation, the RDC, are involved in what’s going on. Right now, there needs to be a solid go-to place in order to help, and that’s what I’m literally working on as we speak. I’m not even kidding. Keep up and support these people, there’s a lot that needs to happen.

Alexander Skarsgard Q&A…

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

Yes, yes… I know you are going through serious Alexander Skarsgard withdrawl. I feel for you and that’s why when I saw the following little Q&A with the wildly popular Swede, I knew I was going to make your Wednesday all the more better…

GQ - On Season 4, the show vs. the books and more… “We’re starting season four in two months. People are always like, “Tell us something, give us a spoiler.” And they think we’re lying when we say we don’t know but we honestly don’t! We get the scripts two weeks before we start shooting and then I just get episode one. While we’re shooting episode one, I get episode two. The show has got to take on a life of its own. There are tons of fans of the books out there, we want to entertain them, but if we did scene-by-scene or episode-by-episode following what happened in the books, then they wouldn’t be entertained. You want them to be on their toes! Plus for us working on the show we need to feel that the show is alive. It’s not like we know exactly what’s going to happen for the next seven years because things will change and things that might work great in the books but not on the set. Lafayette died in the first book but towards the end of season one everyone realised, “We can’t kill this character, he’s too good.” So they brought him back and he’s now one of the main characters.”

About the infamous Rolling Stones cover…. “Why do I “love being naked”? [Laughs] Because I was born that way? I didn’t write the scripts but I don’t mind it if it makes sense. It’s about being comfortable and if it makes sense story-wise. The only time it can get awkward is if you feel exploited, like, “Why am I standing here naked?” and I’ve never felt that. There’s always a reason for it on the show and it’s always at great moments: fun, crazy scenes. So I really don’t mind at all. The Rolling Stone cover just happened on the day. We showed up and we shot very PG-13 with our clothes on for basically the whole day, like six or seven hours. Then towards the end the photographer said, “I have this, these shots are beautiful and the magazine is going to be happy with them but I’d like to try something if you guys are game.” He explained it and it was just one of those things in the moment where we all looked at each other, we’d spent all day with the photographer, we felt comfortable with him, we knew that he was great and the atmosphere was right and we were like, “Fuck it, let’s do it.” No one thought that the magazine would go for it. They want to sell at Walmart. We thought this was going to be too offensive. But I guess they did. [Laughs] I’m glad they did! I liked it a lot. It was definitely more interesting than the safe version…”

On being Tall in Hollywood… “My height can be a problem. A lot of directors and photographers are sometimes not happy because I’m pretty tall and especially if I work with short actors the difference can be pretty massive. [Laughs] That’s definitely happened before. We use apple boxes for the other actors so they get up a bit.”

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm… that last bit reminded me of a certain someone that may have to stand on apple crates for his scenes in True Blood. Any guesses?

GLAAD: ‘True Blood’ has most gay characters

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

(James Hibberd -THR) “True Blood” is the show with the most gay characters on TV.

The HBO drama topped the annual survey by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, which tallied the number of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender characters.

The “True Blood” score (six) is part of an overall rebounding by cable networks in the 15th annual study, which found the number of gay characters off-broadcast increasing after a two-year decline.

Across all of television, gay characters have climbed once again this year, representing 3.9% of all TV characters. With 35 characters total, that’s up 40% from last year.

ABC continues to lead the other broadcast networks, with 11 gay characters. Fox, which a few years ago featured no regular gay characters, now has five. The CW continues to add gay characters, with three. NBC was the only network that declined from last year, down to three. CBS is in last place once again, with one.

On the cable side, HBO has the largest number of gay characters, followed by ABC Family. Showtime, Syfy, TNT, FX, Starz and Teen Nick also have a representative number.

“The increase in lesbian, gay and bisexual characters on primetime television not only reflects the shift in American culture toward greater awareness and understanding of our community but also a new industry standard that a growing number of creators and networks are adopting,” GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios said. “The recent critical and commercial success of shows like ‘Modern Family’ and ‘Glee’ clearly indicate that mainstream audiences embrace gay characters and want to see well-crafted stories about our lives.”
