Spoiler Time: The deets and a few images from Arrow’s season finale

Monday, April 29th, 2013

Sacrifice

“I start the season finale chained up and left for dead,” Stephen Amell confirmed. “I’m chained up to the ceiling … I’m chained up by Mr. Barrowman. Now, in the photos, he is not wearing a mask, and neither am I. Everything is out in the open between us.  The neat thing about the finale is that so much of this season … has just been [about] people with facades. The one that Oliver puts up for his family, the one that Moira puts up for her family, the one that [Malcolm] puts up for Tommy. All of those, toward the last two episodes, just melt away, because danger is so perilously close. We get to see characters interacting in a way that they haven’t all season.”

Spoiler Time: Arrow, The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, and Beauty and the Beast

Monday, April 29th, 2013

“Arrow”: We’ve all been waiting for the moment when Roy Harper meets Oliver Queen without his hood… and it’s coming. Thea confides in Oliver that she and Roy have been looking for the vigilante. “He comes and confronts me and pretty much tells me that it’s a bad idea. He’s a little stern with Roy. Roy, of course, does his eye-roll, and isn’t happy with Oliver, and kind of still thinks Oliver’s kind of a wimp,” Colton Haynes tells us. Roy is in for a bit of a surprise when he finally does find out the identity of the Hood — but don’t expect it to happen any time soon!

“The Vampire Diaries”: As we previously revealed, Damon and the rest of Elena’s friends aren’t going to have the easiest time torturing her… after all, they still believe that somewhere deep down, she’s the girl they all love. So they have to call in the big guns. You know who won’t have any issues taking Elena to task? The recently-scorned Katherine. Expect another showdown between the Petrova doppelgangers this week.

“Supernatural”: The hug between the Winchesters in last week’s episode marked a turning point for them — and a return to the sort of solid bond they haven’t had in a few seasons. “Given how the boys reunited at the beginning of this season, not on the best terms, the one thing that did unite them was this sense of revenge against Crowley and the demons,” says executive producer Jeremy Carver. “Now, we’re going to see things start moving pretty quickly and pretty wildly. A lot of balls in the air. The boys are really going to be constantly confronted with the idea of, ‘Okay, we want revenge, but how far are we willing to go? How much are we willing to sacrifice?’” It’s a theme that drove them when “Supernatural” began, and we’ll find them looking at the question in a new light toward the finale.

“Beauty and the Beast”: Gabe has been a rather mysterious character on “Beauty and the Beast” ever since his arrival. We know he’s causing trouble and has an agenda, but there’s no way — so far — to know if that agenda is on the side of good or the side of evil. Look forward to finding out soon. According to executive producer Jennifer Levin, “[Gabe] is going to cause a lot of problems for Catherine and Vincent … So we’re sort of playing that: Is he good or is he bad?” Although Levin wouldn’t give many more clues — saying only that Gabe might “face” or “kill” Vincent and Catherine — she did promise an answer would come before the end of Season 1. She also promised that that answer would be very much worth the wait.

Spoiler Time: Arrow and The Originals

Thursday, April 25th, 2013

Arrow:  It’s a little early for second season scoop – those episodes haven’t even been written yet! But as for the final batch of four episodes, look out for a guest stint from Angel star J August Richards – who also recently filmed a spot in Joss Whedon’s S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot – as the assassin Mr Blank.

Beyond that, the last few Arrow episodes will build to a final showdown between Oliver (Stephen Amell) and the Dark Archer himself Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman), and, from what we hear, not everyone will make it out alive…

The Originals:  Joseph Morgan revealed that The Originals – a ‘backdoor pilot’ — showing his character Klaus back in his old haunt of New Orleans – has a ‘more epic’ feel than its parent show.

Vampire Diaries is kind of a coming of age story, and I think The Originals is definitely more sort of epic,” he said.

“It’s even in the backdoor pilot that you’ll see – it’s almost like a war is brewing. It’s on a grander scale – it’s less about prom and more about a war between the vampires and the witches.”

Arrow: Recap of S.01:Ep.20 – Home Invasion + Promo & Synopsis of The Undertaking

Wednesday, April 24th, 2013

Synopsis: Oliver and his team go after Deadshot, only to discover that ARGUS plans to capture the assassin… and recruit him as an operative. Meanwhile, Roy seeks out The Hood while Laurel inadvertently drives a further wedge between Oliver and Tommy. And on the island, Shado teaches Oliver how to use the bow.

My thoughts: So much happened in the first 30 minutes of the episode that I felt like I was watching an extended episode. In Oliver’s corner we had a family being marked by an assassin who was hired by a shady businessman who was being tried by Laurel. The parents were successfully murdered, but their little boy ran to safety, but was still being hunted down. In Diggs corner, he gets uber close to taking down Deadshot, but when his plan fails (due to Ollie deciding that protecting the kid and Laurel was more important than getting rid of Deadshot), he almost loses his life.

There were a lot of casualties in this episode:
1. Tommy breaks it off with Laurel because he feels that they are still in love with one another.
2. Diggs leaves Oliver because he feels like he and Oliver are not on the same path.
3. Oliver is technically all alone in his endeavors (outside of Felicity). He runs the club alone (because Tommy is now working with his Dad) and Diggs is off on his own vendetta. He also cannot pursue a relationship with Laurel because he knows it would put her in danger.

I think the only brightspot in the episode revolved around Roy and Thea… maybe these will be the couple to make it in this crazy town name Starling City.

Now… even with all the impressive action sequences and the emotional turmoil that is soap opera worthy, this is not one of my favorite episodes. But, I want to give Colin Donnel kudos for the scenes where he had to convey tenderness to the young child and his scenes with Stephen Amell. Nice bit of acting!

Next time: The Undertaking – Left with no one but Felicity to rely on, Oliver goes after an accountant and gets a lead on Walter’s whereabouts. With Diggle out of his life, Oliver turns to Felicity for help in the field. Meanwhile, Tommy tells Laurel the truth about what he’s doing, and Malcolm remembers working with Robert Queen and Frank Chen to alter The Glades forever after the death of his wife.

Spoiler Time: Arrow

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013

Here’s 10 awesome things to expect for the end of Arrow‘s first season:

1. The love triangle isn’t over. The scene between Laurel and Oliver outside of Verdant from a few weeks back made it pretty clear that Oliver misses Laurel… and that she misses him. This week, Oliver and Tommy will start to confront their shared affection for Laurel. “We’re actually going to get some clarification as to how Oliver feels [about Laurel] this week. I would expect to see my character and Katie [Cassidy]‘s character together a lot more toward the end of the season,” Stephen says. “And that’s not good for Tommy.”

2. Oliver’s issues with his mom will resurface. “Oliver said specifically at the end of Episode 14, we don’t know what the undertaking is and until we do, she’s off limits. Well, we’re going to find out what the Undertaking is soon, and if she’s involved, it’s not going to go quietly into the night.” The tension could potentially lead to Oliver moving out of his mom’s house next season. “God, I hope so,” Stephen laughs. “Even if the season ends with them skipping down the yellow brick road together, I mean, he’s like 30 years old! He needs to get his own apartment. Quote me on that one.”

3. Other heroes will start to come into play. We know that there are other DC Comics heroes in the “Arrow” universe, but Oliver’s connections to those heroes might surprise us. “There’s a wonderful tease at the beginning of the finale, with respect to origins that Oliver has that we don’t know about yet,” Stephen says cryptically.

4. Stephen has been doing more and more of his own stunts — which means more elaborate action sequences for us to enjoy. “We’ve been making fun of my stunt double [Simon Burnett] because for the past three or four days of the finale, he didn’t do anything,” Stephen says (rather gleefully). He’s particularly proud of the scene that opens the season finale, in which we find Oliver chained to the ceiling and left for dead. “He didn’t do a thing, and that’s an incredibly physical sequence. I’m getting better, and the stunt coordinator and the fight choreographer are getting more attuned to what I’m able to do, so when they design these sequences … they are starting to play to my strengths a little bit, so I’m getting to do a ton.”

5. Pre-Island flashbacks in Episode 121, “The Undertaking,” will show a new side of Oliver. “I’d never really played that guy before except for one real quick scene in the pilot, and it went really well … I get to shoot some stuff with Katie, and it was just fun to play that character, to be carefree,” he says, referring to Oliver before the Island. The flashbacks reveal why Oliver brings Sara on the Queen’s Gambit instead of Laurel, and when he does, we’ll get a glimpse of Oliver’s relationship with his father. “His father’s kind of saying, ‘That’s not the best idea,’ but also giving him the secret high-five,” Stephen jokes.

6. A meaningful scene between Oliver and Roy is coming. Stephen tells us that we can look forward to Oliver confronting Roy in a scene with Thea, which will establish their relationship. Expect to see much more of their connection next season. “While we are servicing a lot of our storylines for Season 1, you do start to see Easter eggs for Season 2,” he says. “Thea and Roy are on the trail of the vigilante … and if the police can’t just up and catch him, they’re not going to just up and catch him, but Oliver does catch wind of this before the end of the season, which leads to some interesting interaction between the three of them.”

7. The second-to-last episode is so good, people might confuse it for a finale. “I’m going to have to do a very good job letting people know that Episode 22 is not our season finale,” he laughs. “Because there’s enough in Episode 22, both in the present and on the island, that you could just say ‘Okay, that’s it. I need a break until October.’”

8. We may be looking at an equipment upgrade. The wooden bow that Oliver fashioned on the Island has taken quite a beating this year. “He’s living in the year 2013 and he’s using a wood bow that he made on the island. Things are going to change with him as time goes on. We’ve always got to introduce new gadgets. [Felicity's] going to research some cool new thing that I’m going to use,” he says. That could include his costume — while there are no firm plans for Oliver to ditch his green make-up for an actual mask, it may be in the cards down the line.

9. Diggle and Oliver take a break from the bromance. “Oliver and Diggle have a little bit of a falling out, because Diggle is really after getting Floyd Lawton, and is becoming a little bit obsessive. Oliver doesn’t share the same commitment, because there’s still an overall goal,” he teases. It bothers Diggle that Oliver isn’t dedicated to his cause, given how much Diggle has given to helping Oliver’s mission this year. The good news? The clash is only temporary. The other good news? Diggle doing his own thing means there’s an open position. “He’s not at my disposal, and I have to send young Miss Smoak into the field,” Stephen says. And speaking of our favorite IT girl…

10. Oliver doesn’t see Felicity as a little sister figure in his life. We’re hoping that sparks eventually fly between these two, and judging by the #olicity Twitter tag, we’re not alone. “I think that every day that he sees Felicity, he finds out how capable she is. They have to work very closely together in Episode 21 and in Episode 22. Emily [Bett Rickards] and I get very close in both of those episodes,” says Stephen. “Just based on her knowing more about me than anyone at this point in my present day life, she can probably challenge me in ways that other people can’t, and that’s always attractive.” When asked whether Oliver sees Felicity as a little sister or as a woman, Stephen says definitively, “I think he sees her as a woman.”

Spoiler Time: The Vampire Diaries, Arrow, and Beauty and the Beast

Monday, April 22nd, 2013

“The Vampire Diaries”: Elena’s not going to get free from the Salvatore dungeon any time soon. Stefan and Damon team up with Caroline, Bonnie, and Matt in an effort to torture Elena’s humanity out of her by stealing her ring and exposing her to sunlight. But there’s a problem. They’re trying to use fear to inspire emotion, but Elena’s not afraid, because she knows that while everyone else might have reached their breaking point with her, Damon still won’t ever let anything truly bad happen to her. He can’t help but save her.

“Arrow”: The last time Felicity was out in the field, she looked hot in her dress, but she was decidedly uncomfortable with the situation. (Having a death trap attached to her neck certainly didn’t help things.) In next week’s episode, Oliver needs her help on a mission… and she’s got a very different attitude. “Unlike 15, in which she was uncomfortable in a dress and surrounded by a lot of people which she wasn’t used to, she’s grown more confident,” Emily Bett Rickards tells us. “She’s been training with Diggle and Oliver and learning more about what she’s doing, and learning about herself and her place in this. When we see her in the field this time, she’s obviously still scared, because she’s in a very dangerous situation with very few exits and lots of armed individuals around, but she feels a lot more capable. She’s gotten stronger.”

“Beauty and the Beast”: Leading up to the Season 2 finale, Cat will be making some big, secret discoveries about her own family. Even though there will also be new revelations about Cat’s mom, the major secret will be “not what you would expect,” according to executive producer Jennifer Levin.
