Game of Thrones: Recap pf Season 3 Finale – Mhysa

Sunday, June 9th, 2013

This is long delayed… my recap of the season finale of Game of Thrones.

Synopsis: “No more Starks to bow and scrape to.”

As Stark and Tully men are slaughtered outside the Twins, the Hound grabs a Frey banner and rides through the chaos with Arya Stark in his arms. Arya regains consciousness to see a group of Frey knights surrounding a rider: Grey Wind’s head sewn onto Robb Stark’s corpse.Â

The next morning, Roose Bolton reminds Walder Frey that the Blackfish escaped. Frey doesn’t care; with Edmure Tully as his prisoner, Walder is now Lord of Riverrun. Bolton, now warden of the North, says he will not move to Winterfell – it’s still in ruins. Lord Frey asks what happened there and Roose tells him his bastard son Ramsay has been keeping Theon Greyjoy captive.

” A good man does everything in his power to better his family’s position.”

Tyrion Lannister and his new wife Sansa are strolling the gardens at King’s Landing when Tyrion is summoned to a Small Council meeting. King Joffrey is ecstatic to deliver the news of the Starks’ deaths – he plans to serve Robb’s head to Sansa at his wedding. Tyrion defends his wife by threatening Joffrey. The King throws a tantrum in response and Tywin Lannister sends him to bed.

After the Council departs, Tywin confirms what Tyrion already suspected; he orchestrated the whole thing. Tyrion disapproves of the murders, but Tywin argues that his plan was best for the family. The Lannister name comes first, he reminds Tyrion as he reiterates his order to impregnate Sansa. Tyrion questions whether Tywin ever had to sacrifice anything and his father replies he has: He fought his impulse to kill Tyrion the day he was born. Upon returning to his chamber, Tyrion finds his grieving wife.

Balon Greyjoy receives a scroll demanding that he withdraw his men from the North, while Yara opens the accompanying box containing “Theon’s favorite toy.” Ramsay Snow promises more boxes will follow unless the Ironborn retreat. Although Balon refuses to surrender for a son who cannot further the family line, Yara resolves to rescue her little brother.

“This will never be your home, my lady.”

Varys gives Shae a pouch of diamonds to finance a new life in a distant land. He argues that her presence in the capital puts Tyrion at risk. She rejects the bribe and says that if Tyrion wants her gone, he must tell her himself.

Davos Seaworth goes to visit Gendry in his cell. The boy is surprised to learn that Davos is also from Flea Bottom. The lord explains that his title is recent and shows the missing fingertips on his right hand, Stannis’ punishment for his smuggling days. Davos says he only accepted the lordship because of his son, who is now dead.

Ramsay Snow dines on pork sausage, taunting Theon who begs to be killed. Believing his prisoner unworthy of a name like “Theon Greyjoy,” Ramsay renames him “Reek.”

“Every time we deal with an enemy, we create two more.”

Queen Cersei informs her brother that she won’t be marrying Loras Tyrell. She advises Tyrion that giving Sansa a child will make her happier. Cersei’s children – even Joffrey – are the reason she’s alive.

The Hound and Arya pass by a group of Frey men. When one boasts he helped sew the direwolf head onto Robb’s body, Arya jumps off the horse. Innocently asking to warm herself by their fire, she offers Jaqen H’ghar’s iron coin in exchange. As the man reaches for the coin, Arya stabs him repeatedly. The Hound kills the other men easily. Arya looks down at the first man she’s killed, retrieves the coin and says, “Valar morghulis.”

“The night is gathering…It’s coming for all of us.”

Bran Stark, Hodor, and the Reeds take up camp in the Nightfort. Bran tells a story about a cook in the ancient castle who was turned into a hungry rat after he killed a guest beneath their roof. “That’s something the gods can’t forgive,” Bran explains.

Later that night, Samwell Tarly, Gilly and her baby enter the castle. The Reeds are defensive, but Samwell quickly recognizes the direwolf and identifies Bran as Jon Snow’s brother. Sam is surprised to hear that Bran is venturing beyond the Wall, especially after Jojen reveals he knows about the White Walkers. Sam explains how he killed a White Walker and gives the group the dragonglass he pocketed at the Fist. He reluctantly leads the group to the tunnel to cross through the Wall.

Sam and Gilly arrive at Castle Black and meet with Maester Aemon. Seeing the baby, Aemon reminds Sam of his vows but learns that Gilly is one of Craster’s wives. Gilly names her child after Sam and is invited to stay. When Sam informs Aemon of the mobilizing White Walkers, Aemon prepares to alert the kingdom of the threat.

“What is the life of one bastard boy against a kingdom?”

At Dragonstone, Davos Seaworth practices his reading with Princess Shireen and finds a warning from Maester Aemon. Stannis Baratheon informs Davos that Robb Stark is dead and Melisandre maintains a bigger sacrifice is now necessary. Davos makes a case for Gendry’s life, but Stannis sentences the boy to death.

That night, Davos sneaks down into Gendry’s cell and helps him escape by boat. When Stannis learns of Davos’ actions, he condemns his Hand. Davos shows his king the scroll from the Night’s Watch, and argues that his military expertise will be crucial. Melisandre looks into the flame and confirms the real war is to the north. She persuades Stannis to spare his life.

“Hush now. You’re home.”

Stopping for water, Jon Snow realizes that Ygritte has drawn her bow on him. He tells her that although he loves her, he needs to return to home. Ygritte shoots him repeatedly as he rides away. He arrives at Castle Black seriously injured. Sam and Pyp recognize Jon and carry him inside.

Jaime and Brienne enter King’s Landing, but with his arm bandaged and without his white cloak, Jaime is indistinguishable. He finds Cersei alone in her chamber.

Daenerys Targaryen greets her audience of newly freed Yunkish slaves. Missandei introduces the khaleesi as their liberator, but Dany addresses the crowd herself; they must take back their own freedom, she says. In response, the crowd chants “Mhysa,” Ghiscari for “mother.” They lift her into their arms while Drogon circles above.

My thoughts: It seems like HBO has a modus operandi of ending seasons and beginning with less than stellar episodes that in hindsight only really work as set-ups for the season before them.

Case in point, Game of Thrones ended with Mhysa, which was basically an episode emphasizing the importance or lack of importance of being in a family. For Theon Greyjoy, his lack of manhood meant that his father has cut him off from the Greyjoy line. On the other hand, Theon’s sister is off to sea to retrieve her beloved brother. Theon also was forced to renounce his family when Ramsay tortured him into doing so. Jon Snow returned to his family at the Night Watch, as did Sam. Dany found a new family that worships her after she released them from servitude and we all can sense that this will not end well. There were two sequences that were very explanatory about this theme and the first was between Tywin and Tyrion, where Tywin explained that it is not the crown that gives you power… no, it is the family that gives an individual power. Then there is the scene between Shae and Lord Varys which emphasized the importance of having a last name. Overall, not only did this episode set-up a shift in the importance of a war between the family to a war with the walkers of the north, but where the main families story lines will go forth. However, I still stick to my guns and feel that the season should have ended with the Rains of Castamere.

Spoiler Time: Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, and True Blood

Tuesday, June 4th, 2013

Game of Thrones – We recently asked Nikolaj Coster-Waldau what was up with his alter ego, and though he stayed true to the cast’s cagey nature regarding future plot points, he was damn charming while doing it. “After the bear, [Gwendoline Christie and I] had to take a breather,” he joked. “That took too much out of us.” And when we pressed about whether he could say if Jaime would be in King’s Landing by the end of the season, he replied, “I guess I can….” But he singlehandedly (see what I did there?) won us back when he confirmed that Season 4 of the HBO epic will begin shooting next month.

The Walking Dead – Next season’s fourth episode is titled “Indifference” and will introduce us to two new survivors, Jack and Erin. Both are in their 20s and described as easygoing and “extremely thin.” Jack’s a bit of a joker, while Erin walks through life with rose-colored glasses.

True Blood – First off, here’s the reason Sookie and Alcide’s almost-hookup it didn’t end so well. Secondly, Sookie’s going to be otherwise engaged this season with this guy. Bottom line: The Sookie-Alcide ‘ship has sailed, methinks.

Crying Baby

Game of Thrones: Recap of S3:Ep.9 – Rains of Castamere and Promo and Synopsis of Mhysa

Sunday, June 2nd, 2013

Synopsis: Robb presents himself to Walder Frey, and Edmure meets his bride. Jon faces his harshest test yet. Bran discovers a new gift. Daario and Jorah debate how to take Yunkai. House Frey joins with House Tully.

My thoughts: I am still recovering from the most jaw-dropping episode of Game of Thrones.

We knew this day was coming… Ominous clouds have hovered over Robb Stark since the day he stopped listening to everyone in his camp. He even told his mother that if he listened to her in the first place than his path in life would be so different. Yet, as a glimmer of hope was shining in the distance as Lord Edmure Tully weds one of the Frey’s daughters, the end of Robb Stark’s reign as King of the North was nearing. As Jeyne informs Robb that she would like to name their son Eddard, a servant closes the doors to the hall once Edmure and his bride are escorted out of the hall and that is when all hell breaks loose. Jeyne (why she went is beyond me) was stabbed in her abdomen ensuring the death of both Jeyne and the baby that she was carrying. As this was occurring, everyone else was being shot at with arrows or stabbed by Frey’s men. Robb manages to crawl over to his dead wife and in a moment of defiance, stands to face Frey as his mother threatens to kill Frey’s wife if her son is not allowed to leave. Frey could fucking care less and then Roose Bolton mortally stabs Robb and in utter grief Catelyn slices the throat of Frey’s wife as she screams… then someone slices Catelyn Stark’s neck and she falls to the ground. All this spilt blood was done because Frey’s daughter did not marry a King as he was promised, so he conspired with Tywin Lannister to take down Robb and all those in his camp. Thus ends the Red Wedding and the screaming a crying commences throughout the United States.

Even though the build up to the end of this episode revolved around the death of Robb, Jeyne, and Catelyn Stark, there was movement in other story arcs.

As the Red Wedding is occurring, the Hound gets Arya to the Crossing, but they are not allowed in and we know why. The Hound knocks her out before she storms in and carries her away to relative safety. You just have to feel for this little girl because she has to live with the image of her father being beheaded and now with thw knowledge that her brother and mother have been murdered. She is traveling down a dark path.

Danerys follows Daario’s plan to sack a city (after Grey Worm states that he trusts Daario) via a back gate that will allow him, Jorah and Grey Worm to sneak in. When Dany’s warrior threesome head’s in they face a battle and eventually return to Dany, but she sees everyone but Daario and you can tell she has started to fall for the Conan wannabe. This of course gnaws at Jorah’s craw.

Bram sends his younger brother off with Osha to be kept safe with one of the Stark bannerman, once he realizes that he is a hindrance even though he is learning to use his power to not only manipulate animals, but humans as well. This is what he did with Hodor after he had a fit about a storm, in order to keep him quiet he used his third eye to shut him up and this fascinated everyone. While this is happening, Jon Snow leaves Ygritte behind after his loyalty is challenged by the Wildings and then is attacked by a crow (manipulated by Bran). Not a good move Jon, not a good move at all. We learn from Jon’s old buddy, Sam, that there is a secret passageway through The Wall aside from the main one at Castle Black and he knows of this passage because he read it in a book. Has no one else read this book? Any who, Gilly remarks that this knowledge that he received from images on a page makes him a wizard… Mind you, if he was a wizard than he would read into Gilly’s comment that Wildings that set their eyes on the Wall never live to tell the tale.

Overall, a banner episode that has left me wondering what the hell are they going to do in the last episode and will we survive it?

Synopsis: Joffrey challenges Tywin. Bran tells a ghost story. In Dragonstone, mercy comes from strange quarters. Dany waits to see if she is a conqueror or a liberator.

Spoiler Time: True Blood, Game of Thrones, Wonderland, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, and Arrow

Tuesday, May 28th, 2013

True Blood – To sum up the show’s return: Blood. Death. Blood. Repeat. (But that second death won’t stick.) More specifically, remember last season when Sookie and Jason discovered that someone named Warlow killed their parents? Well, suffice it to say that finding and destroying him will be at the narrative fore (particularly because of this casting). What will surprise you, though, is Warlow’s connection to Bill’s occupation of/transformation into/death by Lillith. Nora is going to have to brush up on her vampire Bible, tout suite.

Game of Thrones – Get ready to make love and war with a new colorful yet charismatic warrior, as the producers are looking to cast Oberyn in Season 4. This highly skilled and cultured man with a vendetta will run afoul of at least one of the Lannisters, while cultivating another to his side. But will his bloodlust overshadow his lust for a string of diverse lovers? Let’s just hope he doesn’t peak too soon!

Wonderland – Let us take a look back to what executive producer Edward Kitsis told reporters before the show was picked up to series: “Wonderland takes place post-curse, so the pilot actually starts when magic comes and the Wraith happens.” Note the Wraith, because that’s very important to where the spin-off actually picks up, with fans seeing a different character’s point of view that won’t make you angry. Also look for the spin-off to feature other lands in a mash-up style similar to Once that may make you question who a past character really was.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D –“Agent Coulson’s a Skrull,” Clark Gregg jokes. (Don’t worry, he’s not really a Skrull!) But Gregg promises the reveal of how he’s alive will be realistic and won’t undermine the integrity of The Avengers. In my very humble comic-book-nerd opinion, I would put money on Coulson being a Life Model Decoy. (#CoulsonLivesLMD. Tweet it now before everyone does come September.)

Arrow – Even though DC Comics fans have always suspected that Roy would go on to become Oliver’s sidekick Speedy, the Season 1 finale seemed to indicate that he might skip over the good-guy routine and go straight to being the villain Red Hood. (He is always wearing that red hoodie!) “One of the fun elements is what I call the comic book destinies for each of the characters and seeing how much they’ll follow those destinies and how much they’ll deviate,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim says of Roy’s future. “As we’ve probably shown a couple times in Season 1, we like to be unpredictable.”

Game of Thrones: Recap of S3:Ep.8 – Second Sons and Synopsis and Promo for the Rains of Castamere

Sunday, May 19th, 2013

Synopsis: King’s Landing hosts a wedding, and Tyrion and Sansa spend the night together. Dany meets the Titan’s Bastard. Davos demands proof from Melisandre. Sam and Gilly meet an older gentleman.

My thoughts: This episode focused a lot on the younger characters of the show for example, Sansa finally wed Tyrion, but he vowed he would keep watch over her because he knows that there will be no consummation of this union that he was forced into by his father. Sansa will need this because Joffrey was once again being  a creep and threatening to bed her. Arya was being taken to her brother, Robb, and her mother by the Hound for ransom and just in time for Robb’s wedding to the Frey. Gendry was taken to Stannis’ castle and with our hearts in our throats we expected the worst, but Melisandre only used Gendry to make a point of the power of a King’s blood. Sam and Gilly make it to a shelter and while they discuss what to name the baby a murder of crows shows up and why are they there? Well, to pinpoint where the baby is for a wandering white walker. Happily, we learn that they can be killed by stabbing the walkers in the back. I was hopping for something a bit more spectacular, but what can you do with icy zombies?

What really drew me in was Dany’s interaction with Daario Naharis of the Second Sons. He was chosen, by luck, to off Dany, but he has other plans for her… like join her and defend her to the hilt because he has the hots for her. So, he kills off his co-horts and swears to  Dany that he and his men will fight for her. Did I mention that Daario was handsome in a Conan the Barbarian kind of way? This coupling, of sorts, will have repercussions with those in Dany’s retinue, especially with Jorah. Her storyline just gets more and more interesting, doesn’t it?

Well, it was a banner episode, but we will have to wait two more weeks for the next new episode… blame Liberace for that.

Next time: The Rains of Castamere is going to air on June 2 and in it Robb presents himself to Walder Frey, and Edmure meets his bride. Jon faces his harshest test yet. Bran discovers a new gift. Daario and Jorah debate how to take Yunkai. House Frey joins with House Tully.
