Spoiler Time: Press Call with Sam Huntington and Kristen Hager who play Josh and Nora, respectively on Syfy’s Being Human

Tuesday, January 8th, 2013

We are only a few days away from the 3rd season premiere of the popular Being Human series and we got to sit on another call for the show… this time with the actors that protray the belved couple of Josh and Nora: Sam Huntington and Kristen Hager.

Please proceed with caution, there are spoilers ahead.

Does Kristen feel different now that she has been upgraded to a  regular?

KH – I feel the same and a bit more included (ha ha).

SH – She is acting more important.

KH – I do not respond to anyone on the set… LoL!

Are you happy playing a normal Josh versus the tormented Josh from seasons past?

SH – Josh is a layered, dynamic and rich character. For me, I feel slightly like I am outside looking in. So, not only is Josh feeling left out, but so am I. Kind of like the ghost of Christmas past.

Did you and Megan create a support group?

SH – We formed a support group. I now sympathize with Meaghan in her first 2 seasons on the show  and feel her pain, because she could not interact with everyone around her in the same way that the other characters did.

Is this season going back to the roommates interacting more?

KH – This season we got back to the roommate scenario and keeping the storylines of these characters connected.

SH – The writer’s goal was to get us back together.

What was the most memorable thing about filming the upcoming season?

SH – The digging of graves.

KH – The director was pointing out I was not digging and just standing. So, you have to look in the episode to see the awkwardness.

KH – Filming with Donna, I loved the Craft.

KH – Nora is more subdued this year, but there are challenges every day.

SH – Dealing with Liam was a new thing for Kristen.

KH – Yea, as a new thread for the character.

SH – Good Call.

SH I felt left out because I felt like I was not a part of the gang.

KH –  I do not mind the long hours…

Is being a Werewolf being easier than a Vampire, as stated by Sam Witwer in last week’s call?

SH Witwer is full of shit, but Aiden has had it rough because of his past and he has dug his own grave.

KH –  think it is case by case

SH – Josh tortured himself, but Nora loved it.

KH – Nora went through the stages, but she questions everything by the end of the second season.

SH: Good Call.

What kind of journey do Nora and Josh go through?

KH – Nora and Josh are in a better place. We will see much more of a human relationship which was nice.

SH –We do go to dramatic places in the 3rd season and they are grounded and real, but there is more levity because we are together and it will be fun to watch. Best season yet.

KH – I agree.  There is freshness and newness to the season.

KH – Nora had been a victim for such a long time, but being WW allowed her to be more comfortable in her skin that she embraced and in season 2 she was terrified and by the end of it she is trying to hold on to her humanity. In season 3 she is looking for a balance, but it will be a struggle for her forever.

SH – More werewolves come into town and that triggers her love the being a wolf.

SH – Sally is interesting, because she is still a supernatural being.  Josh is just a square peg in a round hole. It is unexpected to see how he reacts to regaining his humanness. It was fun to play.

What was it like to see Nora and Josh evolve as a couple?

KH – The writers have given us fantastic and challenging stuff for us to do. We have not seen the end of the journey, but the relationship is much more solid and happy.

SH – Be careful what you wish for is the tag line for the season and they get what they wanted and it comes with a price. It is totally bittersweet for Josh. For Aiden the world is new and he has to get accustomed to it again.

Is there a new dynamic in the house now that Nora has moved in?

KH -Josh and Nora have lived there for a year and half and then they get Aiden and Sally back, but it is an adjustment to them being back and the couple will be conflicted at times as a result.

SH – I thought it was funny that the bedroom was not redecorated. The room was like a room from Se7en.  LoL!

What keeps Josh and Nora together?

SH – Both a co-dependence and love.

KH – Hardships keep them together and we are stronger than ever because of what we have gone through:

Do we see their past come back to haunt them?

KH – Most Definitely! We see what she did with the wolves when she left with them and she will deal with the repercussions of her actions.

Favorite Guest Stars?

SH – Amy Aquino a.k.a. Donna. She is so talented and easy going and brought a newness and freshness to the table. She came so prepared and cared so much.

KH – Xander Berkely as Liam who is the father of the twins and comes back to see what happened to his kids. He is a fantastic bad guy and knew what he was doing. We had some great scenes together.

Did you like watching Werewolves and Vamnpres when you were young?

KH – I loved it. Even now I love the idea of ghosts being around us

What is the process to becoming a Werewolf?

SH – It’s crazy man. There 4 phases to becoming a WW. Chest Piece, Back Piece which is difficult to apply. Hands (the most annoying due to the awkwardness and peeing issues) and the face— it takes 6 to 7 hours and is very intense to put on. But because it is so excruciating it helps you acting wise.

Will we see the female werewolf twin?

SH -She is still around

What is your favorite prop?

SH –  A statue that is in the living room  which is a.k.a. the dog.cat. man.dude. It will be the one piece from the set that everything will be fighting over. I think Meaghan will get her hands on it.

Sam Huntington Interview

Saturday, February 4th, 2012

Sam Huntington was recently interviewed by The Morton Report where he spoke to them about his career, his appearance on the show Face Off, and of course, his role on Being Human.

Here’s an excerpt from the interview where he discusses Being Human:

Can you talk a little bit about the new werewolves we’re going to see this season on Being Human and how they’re obviously different from Josh?SH: I can’t tell you exactly what they are. What I can say is they represent a real threat to Josh, and not so much physically, but more socially. Who they are is also a threat to the people that Josh loves. I don’t really want to give you more than that because, thinking about it now, it is kind of a reveal in the episode. So I feel like I would be doing the show a disservice by revealing what they are, but I promise you that they’re really bad ass and cool.

I’ve read that the (werewolf) transformation effects on Being Human have become more streamlined and more CGI (computer-generated image). Can you talk about that a little bit?

SH: Yes, I think last year they kind of came to the realization that they couldn’t afford to lose me for six hours on end during the work day, which was lucky for me because it damn near killed me every time they did it. So I think because of that and the fact that the technology is so fantastic, they decided to further supplement the SFX (special effects) makeup this season with CGI. The good news all around is that it means less time in the makeup chair for me, and I think they (the effects) look badass. I mean, I’ve seen quite a bit of them now and they look really, really, really good.

The other thing I think they realized is that when they do put me in the makeup, they don’t always need to show my whole body. For instance, a lot of times they’ll just show my chest bursting or just the claws and the fangs descending or you’ll just see my face darkening. So they don’t have to go full-on with it every time, which, again, has been a real saving grace for me this year. And the cool thing is it doesn’t sacrifice any of the awesomeness of the werewolf effects.

We’re two episodes into the new season of Being Human and so far we’ve had a bunch of new characters come onboard. How has that affected the dynamic of the three main characters and just the dynamics of the setting in general?

SH: That’s a fantastic question. Yes, there are a lot of new characters this year, which I think broadens and makes the show richer. At the same time, it means that the three of us, Sam (Witwer), Meaghan (Rath) and I, didn’t get to spend as much time with each other this year.

The funny thing is, though, that this didn’t change the dynamic between the three of us at all. In fact, when we did get to work together, we were like school girls. It was ridiculous and it brought the silliness on-set to a new level (he jokes). The three of us love each other like siblings. It truly is the closest I’ve ever been with my fellow cast mates.

Do you miss working together as often?

SH: Oh yes, I miss them desperately. Not only do I miss them personally and we have this crazy and amazing bond, but also when we walk on-set and are all working together, we know what we’re doing is going to be great.

The work is just comfortable, natural and organic with those guys. We’re able to help each other and guide each other through the process. It just works. It’s like we were meant to work together, and it’s only gotten better.

What is it about Being Human that you feel resonates with you?

SH: Well, it’s right there in the title, you know? These three people, whose world has gotten bigger this year, are really trying to overcome, accept and fight against their temptations and who they are. There’s so much humanity in what they’re doing that I think it’s really engaging for people watching, hopefully.

We say it all the time, but at the core, this show is first and foremost a character drama as opposed to a supernatural show. I think that heightens the world and the stakes, but ultimately it’s the real human aspect that people tune in for.

Are there any moments from this season of Being Human that you can speak of that were really challenging for you as an actor, either physically or emotionally?

SH: Oh gosh, yes. One of the great things about making the show and being on-set is that I’m challenged everyday. I go to work everyday and really work, I do my best to bring the beautiful writing that we’re given to life in a natural way.

We really fight against camp on Being Human, and it starts in the writers’ room. So luckily by the time it gets to us it’s beautiful material. But it’s really my job to make it as natural as possible so that viewers will feel like these characters are human beings and fighting a very human fight.

But yes, I had many moments this year where I walked to set and I was scared that I wasn’t going to be able to do what I wanted to do with the scene and what the scene deserved. Luckily I think most of the time I was able to achieve what I set out to do, but I’m always questioning myself and trying to better myself as an actor and that’s what’s kind of fun about this show. It’s very challenging.

I’m anxious to see where Josh’s and Nora’s (Kristen Hager) relationship goes this season. Are you pleased with how they’ve been writing that relationship so far and what do you enjoy most about playing those scenes out with Kristen Hager?

SH: Well, Kristen Hager is for all intensive purposes the fourth roommate, right? Especially this season, I think she is as much part of the show as any of us and she’s such a brilliant actress. So I feel like the luckiest guy on the planet. My scene partners, Sam, Meaghan and Kristen, are just so brilliant.

But yes, the cool thing is I have a deep connection with Kristen, and some of the scenes we’re in together are so heavy and relatable. They’re about real issues, including miscarriage and pregnancy, which are probably happening way too soon in this relationship. These are the types of things, though, that I think people can probably really relate to, and Kristen and I take that into everything we do.

She does such a beautiful job that it makes me have to work harder to keep up. As far as how they continue to write their relationship, man, it’s like a rollercoaster. It’s all over the place this season and, without revealing too much, it really has to do with the trauma that her being a werewolf causes to the relationship and how Nora reacts to that. The party scene (in episode three) where she breaks down is one of my favorite scenes I’ve ever been a part of. It’s just so crushing.
