SBLC goes to the Movies: Divergent Begins Casting, The Vampire Academy Movie and Anna Paquin will be Rogue Once Again…

Sunday, January 27th, 2013

With The Harry Potter Series, The Twilight Series and The Hunger Games Series making a dent in moviedom, it stood to reason that Hollywood would be knocking on the door of all the major YA authors. The latest to get the fast track to the silver screen is Divergent by Veronica Roth.

Divergent revolves around Beatrice Prior, who resides in a dystopian Chicago where society is divided into five factions. Each faction is dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she’s chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she’s kept hidden from everyone because she’s been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

Over the last week so casting has begun. To date, Shailene Woodley has been cast as Tris a.k.a. Beatrice. You may know Woodley from “The Secret Life of the American Teenager”  and “The Descendants.” Fans of the book series have been waiting on pins and needles on who will portray “Four.” As was the case for The Hunger Games casting, Alex Pettyfer, Jeremy Irvine, and Lucas Till are in the mix.

One of the most interesting bits of casting news is that Kate Winslet may star in this movie. Do you think she would portray Natalie Prior, Mom to Tris?

There is more new in Movies. As you are well aware of, The Vampire Academy is also being made into a movie. Recently, the producer of the movie – Mike Preger – sent a note to the fans of the book series and it was quite lengthy. If you would like to read it, please click here.

I have to admit that trying to adapt a beloved series can be quite daunting. Not only are you contending with the actual production of the movie, but you have to contend with die hard fans that use social media to not only voice their opinions on casting, they give out details about location shoots and make it incredibly hard to keep this process seamless. Good luck Mr. Preger.

Also, we have learned that  True Blood’s Anna Paquin will reprise her role of Rogue in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Casting News: Joss Whedon’s S.H.I.E.L.D.

Monday, October 1st, 2012

S.H.I.E.L.D. stands for Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division, a covert organization run by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) of the Marvel Avengers Movie. If you have seen any of the Marvel movies, than you know that S.H.I.E.L.D. is the glue that holds all the superheroes together and steers them to do good on behalf of humanity. This is Joss Whedon’s baby and he is tentatively set to direct the pilot; he’s also slated to write the series with his brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen.

Here are five character descriptions for the upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot that will be airing on ABC.

SKYE – This late-20s woman sounds like a dream: fun, smart, caring and confident – with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm.

AGENT GRANT WARD – Quite the physical specimen and “cool under fire,” he sometimes botches interpersonal relations. He’s a quiet one with a bit of a temper, but he’s the kind of guy that grows on you.

AGENT ALTHEA RICE – Also known as “The Calvary,” this hard-core soldier has crazy skills when it comes to weapons and being a pilot. But her experiences have left her very quiet and a little damaged.

AGENT LEO FITZ and AGENT JEMMA SIMMONS – These two came through training together and still choose to spend most of their time in each other’s company. Their sibling-like relationship is reinforced by their shared nerd tendencies – she deals with biology and chemistry, he’s a whiz at the technical side of weaponry.
